sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum. an established plant grown from a rooted node

you sugar cane grow your own sugarcane. good for chewing and juicing.

this variety of black sugar cane will perform in a range of conditions.
low areas that stay damp, similar to where you’d plant bananas, are a good bet.
sugar cane can also be grown as part of a water garden or a bog garden. it will grow planted in some muck and set in the shallows or as an emergent plant.

sugar cane is tropical and does best in zones 9-11. anywhere cooler than that, dieback can occur or the winter can slow them down. moist earth can be helpful in protecting plants from cold temps, and sugar cane likes that anyway.
the amount of water sugar cane receives is directly proportionate to how sweet it is, both because it needs the water for creating sucrose through photosynthesis, and because the water is necessary for storing the sucrose in the stalks.

as you can see from the images, the stalks start out green. they go through a reddish phase before turning toward purple and deepening into almost black.

the juice in the stem is obviously very high in sugar, but does also contain antioxidants before being processed into sugar. think of it as liquid raw sugar that can be used to sweeten almost anything.

(i have not done much with it aside from simply gnaw on it like an animal, which is a satisfactory experience. it’s very sweet and quite juicy.)

shipping
plants ship on Mondays and Tuesdays, priority mail, packaged as gently as possible.
live plants are affected by the shipping process, but you can expect them to rebound quickly when given adequate care.
please do your part to help your new plant friend survive by promptly unpackaging and repotting, and maybe a gentle re-introduction to direct sunlight even for sun loving plants.

i am a permaculture nerd and do not spray any pesticides or use any chemical fertilizers. i grow almost everything in the ground or in my pond/bog in Florida zone 10. stock is moved to nursery pots for root development prior to sale.

it’s not shop policy to accept returns on plants/seeds/cuttings. plants depart healthy and well-packed, and the weather and the postal service are variables beyond ones control. however, if a customer is unhappy with a purchase, i will work with them to resolve the issue.

plants ship only to addresses in the continental US, excluding California and Arizona.
