Morus nigra, black mulberry
half gallon size, rooted from cuttings.
Left to its own devices, mulberry will grow into a large tree, potentially 30 or 40 feet tall. some varieties are smaller, and even a larger variety can be pruned into a more shrub-like state, if desired. and it’s okay to prune for more or lower branches.
the ‘parent’ mulberry tree was grown from a cutting taken from a local, thriving population of mulberries growing near a river in a town just north. this mulberry tree bore fruit in just a couple years and grew quickly. despite being south of the typical range, the tree is doing very well with no intervention aside from an occasional watering.
mulberry trees like plenty of sun, well drained and neutral soil, and a good amount of water. but they’re pretty drought tolerant, too. and maybe, if you’re further south, a little shade isn’t a bad thing.
you may compete with birds and squirrels for the berries, or you could celebrate supporting the local wildlife.
because they are very good berries. longish, very dark purple when ripe, and even good before they ripen all the way, if you like the tartness.
different strains of mulberry are from different parts of the world. red mulberry is native to North America, and white is native to China. black mulberry is native to western Asia and was brought to Europe by the Greeks and Romans at the dawn of the millenium for its fruit. white mulberry came along, too, serving as the host plant for silk worms.
shipping
plants ship on Mondays and Tuesdays, priority mail, packaged as gently as possible.
live plants are affected by the shipping process, but you can expect them to rebound quickly when given adequate care.
please do your part to help your new plant friend survive by promptly unpackaging and repotting, and maybe a gentle re-introduction to direct sunlight even for sun loving plants.
i am a permaculture nerd and do not spray any pesticides or use any chemical fertilizers. i grow almost everything in the ground or in my pond/bog in Florida zone 10. stock is moved to nursery pots for root development prior to sale.
it’s not shop policy to accept returns on plants/seeds/cuttings. plants depart healthy and well-packed, and the weather and the postal service are variables beyond ones control. however, if a customer is unhappy with a purchase, i will work with them to resolve the issue.
plants ship only to addresses in the continental US, excluding California and Arizona.
